Webcam & mic test

Test your webcam and microphone

Screen Recording App icon

See your camera live and watch the mic level move as you speak. No install, no signup, and nothing is uploaded.

Before a video call, an interview, or a recording, it helps to know the camera and mic actually work. This page checks both in your browser: a live preview so you can see yourself, and a meter that moves when the microphone hears you. The feed never leaves your device - there is no upload and no recording, just a quick check. It is the same private, local-first approach as our screen recorder.

Nothing is uploaded. The camera and mic stay on your device.

Webcam test

Click Start camera to see a live preview here.

Microphone test

The bar moves with the sound your mic picks up.

Tip: only switch on "Hear myself" with headphones, or your speakers will echo into the mic.

Private by design

Nothing is uploaded.

The preview and the mic meter run entirely on your device. There is no recording and no server step - close the tab and nothing remains.

No install, no signup

It is just a web page.

No app, no browser extension, no account. Works on a locked-down work or school computer where you cannot install anything.

Both at once

Camera and mic together.

Check the picture and the sound on one page, pick between multiple cameras or mics, and confirm you are ready before you join.

How it works

Two quick checks, both in the browser. The only permission involved is your browser's own "allow camera and microphone" prompt.

When a quick test saves you

A few moments where ten seconds of checking beats finding out the hard way:

Ready to record, not just test?

If the camera and mic check out, the same private, no-install approach records your screen too - with system audio, your microphone, and a webcam bubble in the corner, all saved on your device with no upload.

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers about testing your webcam and microphone here.

Is my camera or microphone recorded or uploaded?

No. This is a test, not a recording. The live preview and the mic meter run entirely in your browser on your own device. Nothing is saved and nothing is sent to a server. When you close the tab, it is gone.

Why does it ask for camera and microphone permission?

A web page can only see your camera or hear your mic if you allow it, so your browser shows a permission prompt. That prompt is controlled by you, and the access stays on your device. If you blocked it by accident, click the camera icon in the address bar and allow access, then start the test again.

The mic bar is not moving. What is wrong?

Check that the right microphone is selected in the dropdown, that it is not muted in your system settings, and that another app (a call, for example) has not taken it over. If the bar still does not move, try a different mic in the dropdown or reconnect the device.

I see a black box instead of my camera.

Usually the camera is in use by another app, the lens is covered, or a different camera is selected. Close other apps that might be using it, pick another camera in the dropdown, and make sure nothing is physically covering the lens.

Can I test my speakers here too?

Switch on "Hear myself" to route the microphone to your output so you can hear it. Use headphones when you do, or the sound from your speakers loops back into the mic and echoes. A dedicated speaker test is on the way.

Does it work on a phone or tablet?

Yes. Unlike screen recording, checking your camera and microphone works on phones and tablets too - in Safari on iPhone and iPad, and in Chrome on Android. Tap Start camera or Start microphone and allow access. One caveat: the "Hear myself" playback can be silent on some iPhones, but the live preview and the mic level meter still work.

Do I need to install anything?

No. It is a normal web page - no app, no browser extension, no account, and no admin rights. That is why it works on locked-down work and school computers.

Can I record my screen too, not just test?

Yes. The same site has a free online screen recorder with the same no-upload, no-install approach. It records your screen with system audio, microphone, and a webcam overlay, all saved on your device.
